All about BACKUPs and RESTORE

Backup and Data Protection Services

There are many ways to protect your files, and we work with all major backup solutions. This includes simple USB drives, encrypted external drives, NAS devices, second internal drives, and secure cloud backups. We set everything up so your backups run automatically. The best method depends on how important your data is and how often it changes.

For clients who want the strongest protection from ransomware, we offer encrypted backup setups using Veracrypt. I can create an encrypted container or encrypt an entire hard drive, whether it is inside your computer or an external drive. After the backup finishes, the encrypted drive can automatically dismount. When it is dismounted, it becomes invisible to ransomware, so even if you forget to unplug the external drive, your data stays safe.

We also personally remote in to check systems before unlocking encrypted drives. This makes sure the computer is clean, safe, and ready for backups or restores. We periodically test backup drives with restore operations to verify your data is readable and not corrupted.

We recommend using at least three rotating backup drives. This protects you from hardware failure and gives you multiple restore points if a backup becomes damaged or compromised. For very important data, I can run backups to all three drives for maximum safety.

Another strong option is using an external or NAS device in RAID 5 or RAID 6, as long as it is disconnected after the backup completes. You can also have a separate NAS unit that receives copies from your main unit. Even NAS devices can be hit by ransomware when they stay mounted, because ransomware targets any drive it can see.

The safest data is the data that is at rest, disconnected, and not mounted. My backup plans are built around this principle, giving you peace of mind and protection from ransomware, hardware failure, and accidental deletion.

Cloud Backup Options

Backing up to the cloud means your important files are stored in a secure online location instead of just on your computer. Services like Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive are popular because they automatically upload your files in the background and keep them safe even if your computer fails.

With cloud backups you do not have to worry about losing files to hardware failure, theft, or accidental deletion. If something happens to your computer, all your files can be restored by logging into your cloud account from any device.

We can set these services up so your important folders, documents, photos, and work files are backed up on a regular schedule. Cloud storage also keeps older versions of files, so if you make a mistake or save over something important, you can roll back to an earlier copy.

Cloud backups work best when combined with local encrypted backups. This gives you two layers of protection: one online and one offline. It balances safety, convenience, and recovery speed.

Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive each have their strengths. I help you choose the best one based on your needs and set it up so it works silently in the background and keeps your data safe.
